A Legal Futures article by Joanne Hunter, head of marketing at Select Legal Systems Limited, provides tips for firms seeking to convert data over from one legal practice management system to another, urging the use of ethical and experienced software suppliers to handle data assets. It notes that some technology firms are known for making it difficult for law firms to leave, by making data retrieval hard and thereby making the transfer process more onerous. It advises that although some software suppliers behave “as though the data in the old system you have decided to leave behind is theirs, it does of course belong to the law firm. The law firm is entitled to a complete copy of the data in its entirety.” It also suggests that where possible, dual running of both the old and the new system for a short while is desirable.
