A report from research and advisory firm Gartner reveals that lower-cost in-house legal departments spend three times as much as higher-cost departments on alternative legal services providers and double the amount on training. Lower-cost departments also do a larger proportion of work in-house rather than rely on external law firms. The report also says lower-cost legal departments made more “sustainable savings”. Michael Mayfield, research director of Gartner’s legal and compliance practice, said: “Bringing strategic, complex work in-house can actually improve the quality of legal services because your in-house staff are more familiar with business operations.
